Adult Family Care is a MassHealth program that provides compensation to family members or non-family members so that they may care for individuals with developmental disabilities in a home setting. Family members, who are not guardians, may become caregivers for individuals 16 years or older who have MassHealth insurance but, due to medical, physical, cognitive or psychiatric issues, cannot safely live alone. Non-family caregivers are also able to provide services in their homes. Caregivers receive tax exempt payment for providing room and board, assistance with activities of daily living, and medication and healthcare management. They also accompany the care recipient to medical appointments. Caregivers receive training, vacation, and ongoing support from an AFC Care Manager, Registered Nurse and Program Director.
