What do VINS volunteers do?
There are many opportunities for volunteering in the Northampton Public Schools. Volunteers may elect to work at the elementary, middle school or high school level in whatever subject area they choose, at a time that is convenient for them.
A regular VINS volunteer works a minimum of one hour per week on a regular, consistent basis. These volunteers usually work with one student or a small group of students in specific subject areas, such as reading, writing, math, algebra, geometry, science, Latin, or Spanish. Volunteers work under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
A resource volunteer comes in on a one-time or short-term basis, usually to talk with students about a specific topic or work on a specific project. Teachers often seek resource volunteers to visit classes to speak about their special interests, knowledge, or careers.
Volunteer opportunities available on both a regular (weekly) and resource (one-time or short-term) basis. Volunteers may work one-to-one or in small groups with students, help the class in special projects, or make special presentations. All volunteer work is done under the direction of a teacher.
How Do I Join VINS?
To start, please fill out a volunteer application and CORI form, available on the FORMS page of the VINS website. Then we ask you to attend an orientation at your convenience. The VINS coordinator will match your skills and time availability to a teacher’s request.
