Genesis began in 1976 and continues its mission today with an open atmosphere of hospitality and inclusiveness welcoming persons of all faiths, spiritual paths, and backgrounds. Founded by the Sisters of Providence of Holyoke, MA whose mission dates back over 140 years as a transforming and healing presence in the community, the center has always promoted a climate of wellness through its programs, workshops, retreats, mini-courses and lectures.
Situated on the former Crane Estate in Westfield, the property once was the Holy Child Guild administered by the Sisters of Providence from 1933-1975. Work began in 1975 to convert it to the spiritual life and conference center and one year later, it was formally opened. In 1990 the 7,000 foot carriage house underwent an extensive restoration and today includes meeting and conference facilities on the first floor and an art space, small ecology library and a meditation room on the second floor.
Genesis also provides overnight accommodations in its thirty room guest wing and dining services in its three dining rooms. A number of programs and retreats, spiritual and personal are hosted by Genesis in its facilities but the space is also leased to outside professional groups for programs, meetings and conferences.
The staff at Genesis is known for their compassionate and openhearted manner to all who visit. The center has evolved to meet the needs of those who appreciate a holistic approach to mind, body and spirit in our contemporary world. Guests of the center visit from local, regional and international locales.
Today Genesis is known for its environmentally friendly grounds and serene atmosphere. Of special note: The land where Genesis now flourishes in Westfield, Ma, was known by the Native people who inhabited the land, the Pocumtuck or Deerfield Indians, as Pashasock, and the Colonial Westfield/Russell area was called Woronoco/ Waranoak. Genesis appreciates the history of the land it now resides on.
